A 16-year-old male, who lives in unincorporated Cook County near Glenview, surrendered to investigators at the Glenview Police Station just after 9:00 a.m. Monday August 17, 2020, according to the Glenview Police Department.
The 16-year-old male, whose identity was not released, was charged with second-degree murder on Monday. He was processed and transported to the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center in Chicago where he awaits a hearing, according to police.
Police did not initially release any details about the case.
Valdez was found alive with a stab wound to the chest about 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 5, 2020 in tall grass in the block of 1200 Greenwood Road. He was transported by Glenview firefighter/paramedics to Level 1 Trauma Center Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he died during emergency trauma surgery.
His death was ruled a homicide after an autopsy determined Valdez died from the penetrating stab wound to his chest, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The crime scene was located in a residential neighborhood and near a water pumping station in Glenview. A citizen, who happened to be passing by the scene, called 911 to report seeing the teen down.
A funeral service for Elias Valdez was held Friday, August 14, 2020. At the funeral, Pastor Carlos Guadagno, of Corona de Amor in Palatine, said the boy would be missed and prayed that loved ones would eventually feel peace.
Valdez, who lived on Dearlove Road in Glenview, was a respected sophomore at Glenbrook South High School. In a message to families, District 225 Glenbrook South High School principal Lauren Fagel described Valdez as “a kind, charismatic young man who exhibited great leadership qualities.” She said he loved his mom and family and had an “endearing spirit.”
