Outages were reported Sunday morning August 30, 2020 including Verizon, Comcast, CNN, Facebook, Twitter, Zoom, New York Times, New York State, T-Mobile, Garmin, WOW, Netflix, Hulu, Target, Amazon, Starbuck, several gaming platforms, and more. The issue may have been caused by a problem at an Internet transit provider, which usually connects an Internet Service Provider to the Internet’s larger global system of interconnected computer networks.
Initially, the issue looks like some type of error with an Internet transit provider, and there was no official confirmation of a cyberattack or hacking action on the transit provider.
Cloudflare — a website infrastructure platform that offers content delivery network (CDN) services and protection against distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks — reported a minor service outage. On Cloudflare’s status page, the company announced at about 5:21 a.m. CDT that the company was investigating an issue which potentially impacts multiple customers.
Minutes later Cloudflare announced that it is investigating an increased level of HTTP 5xx class errors.
By 6:39 a.m. CDT Cloudflare announced issue had been identified and that a fix is being implemented. At 6:57 a.m. CDT Cloudflare announced, “We have identified an issue with a transit provider which is causing 5xx class HTTP errors, such as HTTP 522, 502, 503. This is affecting all data centers that make use of this transit provider and we are working on implementing mitigations to alleviate this issue.”
A fix was implemented in data centers while working with other transit providers to improve “reachability” and at 9:46 a.m. CDT Cloudflare announced, “We are observing significantly improved stability and reachability in the network as the third party provider is implementing a fix for their issue and we have implemented measures to work around the problem.”
