Severe weather is possible this afternoon and evening starting about 3:00 p.m. with the highest risk from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday July 15, 2020. High humidity, the position of the upper level jet, instability in the atmosphere, and a fast moving cold front factor in the likelihood of severe weather.
Weather Radar (also nexrad.chgowx.com) showed a small storm pass through the area by about 6:30 a.m. The nearest storms to Chicagoland were located departing the Milwaukee area at 8:00 a.m.
Rain accumulation of 1-3 inches is possible this afternoon and evening if thunderstorm cell trains occur, but without training Arlington Heights will probably see less than one inch of rain from the period this afternoon to about sunrise Thursday morning. Most areas of northeast Illinois will see at least 0.5 inch of rain. Heavier rainfall may be more likely south of Interstate 80 and near a line from Decatur to Champaign.
High temperatures today are predicted with low confidence because of the variable and unpredictable cloud cover before the storms arrive, but air temperatures are expected reach about 90°F. Thursday will still reach the mid-80s even following the passing of a cold front.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center the greatest chance for tornadoes is in the St. Louis area and southwest Illinois with some risk as far north as Interstate 80 and the far southwest suburbs, and east just across the Illinois-Indiana state line in Indiana.
