Police and firefighter/paramedics from Chicago responded about 1:06 p.m. Thursday July 16, 2020 to a report of a person that did not resurface while swimming just south of the Museum of Science & Industry with a corrected address of about 5500 South on the lakefront.

Divers entered the water from a CFD helicopter and Squad 5’s crew about 1:14 p.m. Divers were in the water under the command of Battalion 5 at the scene.
The male victim was recovered about 1:35 p.m. and transported to University of Chicago Medical Center. Chicago Fire Department said they were sorry to report that the young man rescued from the lake near 5500 south has expired according to the Emergency Department at University of Chicago hospital. Chicago Fire Department estimatesd that the man was under the water about 40 to 45 minutes.

Chicago Fire Department reminded people that Lake Michigan is turbulent with severe undertow. Beaches are closed and it is especially dangerous to swim near rock walls. A CFD rescue diver got out of the water and said it was like a “washing machine”
