Gurnee police responded about 9:30 p.m. Friday July 3, 2020 to an apartment in the block of 6700 Derby Drive on Gurnee’s west side to a report of a shooting involving a possible domestic incident.
Gurnee police on arrival found an uninjured child and a female gunshot victim at the address suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen, but did not initially find the shooter.
Police carried the female gunshot victim out of the apartment to safety, and to an ambulance waiting nearby. The adult female was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center, where she was initially listed in critical condition.

Gurnee police officers also removed the couple’s 3 year-old child from the apartment to a secure area. Both removals were risky because police did not know the whereabouts of the shooter. Initially, the child was assessed without any apparent injuries.
Police determined the shooter was still inside the apartment, and that he refused to come out. Nearby residents were evacuated, and a Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) Emergency Response Team — using heavily armed tactical officers, armored vehicles, remotely operated equipment, an operations vehicle and a command vehicle — was dispatched to the scene to locate the shooter.
Police used a drone to locate the shooter, who was found to have had died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police are investigating the case.
