Baltimore protesters pulled down a statue of Christopher Columbus and threw it into the city’s Inner Harbor on Saturday night.
Protesters in Baltimore pulled down a statue of Christopher Columbus and dumped it into the city’s Inner Harbor on Saturday night July 4, 2020.
Protesters used ropes to topple the Christopher Columbus near the Little Italy neighborhood. According to The Baltimore Sun, the Christopher Columbus statue was owned by the city of Baltimore and dedicated in 1984 by former Mayor William Donald Schaefer and President Ronald Reagan.
As an extension of the atrocity of the killing of George Floyd at by a Minneapolis police officer, protesters in multiple cities in the United States have demanded the removal of statues of Columbus and other historical statues. Critics of Christopher Columbus allege that the Italian explorer’s history of discovering new land across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe should be erased and/or discredited for alleged genocide and exploitation of native peoples in the Americas.
Statues of Columbus have been guarded by police or private citizens in some cities, or have been moved to secure locations; but other Christopher Columbus statues have been destroyed or vandalized in cities such as Boston, Massachusetts; Miami, Florida; Richmond, Virginia; and St. Paul, Minnesota. The Christopher Columbus statues in Boston, Massachusetts and Waterbury, Connecticut were decapitated. The statue in Richmond, Virginia was set on fire.
The George Washington monument in Baltimore’s Druid Hill Park was vandalized with red spray paint and graffiti, and the words “destroy racists” in white lettering were displayed at the base of the statue in June 2020.
