Chicago Police Deputy Chief Dion Boyd, a top-ranking member of the CPD command staff, was found dead Tuesday morning at the Homan Square facility on the West Side, in an apparent suicide.
A high-ranking Chicago police officer took his own life inside the Chicago Police Department’s Homan Square facility at 1011 South Homan Avenue on the West Side Tuesday, July 28, 2020.
Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown confirmed that Deputy Chief Dion Boyd, a 30-year veteran of the department and member of his command staff, died by suicide.
“We are shocked, saddened with the loss, and it’s deeply felt by me and the many colleagues and friends with whom Deputy Chief Dion Boyd worked and mentored throughout his career,”
— CPD Superintendent David Brown
A procession of police officers, firefighters and paramedics escorted Boyd’s body to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office around 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2020.
“The job of a Chicago police officer is not easy, particularly in a time when there is intensified stress. Life can seem insurmountable at times for anyone, but for police officers the stakes are even higher due to the tireless work they do to safeguard others.”
— CPD Superintendent David Brown
A medical ruling of suicide by the Cook County Medical Examiner would make this suicide the ninth Chicago Police Department police office to die by suicide in two years.
