Woman dies in house fire on Garland Ave near Church Road Friday evening (WGN News).
Police and firefighter/paramedics from Winnetka responded about 7:20 p.m. Friday May 1, 2020 to a report of a fire in the bedroom of a house fire in the block of 600 Garland Avenue.
Winnetka Fire Department’s Battalion 28 on arrival by 7:22 p.m. reported a fire in a second story bedroom at the front of a large 2-story house. Firefighters received a report that a person was trapped in a second floor bedroom.
Winnetka resident Susan Garland, age 82, was identified at the scene and was pronounced dead.
Susan Garland was a professional writer, volunteer and philanthropist. She was also active with the Christ Church Winnetka.
The fire call was upgraded to a working fire at 7:22 p.m. Firefighters from Glencoe (auto aid with Winnetka firefighters), Highland Park and Glenview responded mutual aid.
Winnetka Fire Department’s Battalion 28 requested the Illinois State Fire Marshal at about 7:40 p.m. A fire investigation K-9 was also requested.
A Division 3 MABAS Box Alarm Box (#FI929) for an investigator box was activated at 7:49 p.m.
