McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighter/paramedics from Richmond, Wonder Lake and Spring Grove responded about 10:20 p.m. Sunday May 17, 2020 to a report of a serious crash with entrapment and two injured in the block of 7900 Tryon Grove Road in unincorporated Richmond. The crash was located on Tryon Grove Road between Barnard Mill Road and County Highway 7, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
Firefighter/paramedics and deputies on arrival discovered the wrecked car in a group of trees. Both crash victims in a 2001 Toyota Camry were pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other people in the heavily-damaged vehicle, and no other injuries reported. During the crash, the driver was wearing his seat belt, but the female passenger was not wearing a seat belt, according to the McHenry Country Sheriff. The vehicle air bags did not deploy, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
A medical transport helicopter was assigned, but was cancelled.
The victims’ identities were not initially released pending notification of relatives. The male driver was identified as a resident of Wonder Lake. The identity of the female passenger was not initially known.
McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies, investigating the scene, determined that the wrecked vehicle was driven eastbound on Tryon Grove Road when the male driver failed to turn where a curve in the roadway turns in a southern direction.
The area near the crash scene on Tryon Grove Road was closed for approximately five hours Sunday night during the extended crash investigation and vehicle recovery.
Although weather was initially considered a possible factor, McHenry County Sheriff’s reported they do not believe that weather was a factor in the crash.
The crash scene was west of US 12, northwest of Glacial Park Conservation Area and southwest of Richmond. Tryon Grove Road (County Highway 36) is a two-lane highway (one lane each way), and the Speed Limit is marked 55 MPH. The crash scene was near an elongated S-turn.
