Wheeling Police reported in a news release Friday May 22, 2020 that Jose Fermin Zavala-Hernandez was last seen near Route 53 and Rand Road in Palatine. The precise date and time and the precise location were not released. The interchange of Route 53 and Rand Road is located at the border of Palatine and Arlington Heights.
Jose Fermin Zavala-Hernandez appeared to have an injury to his hand and was walking with a noticeable limp. Jose Fermin Zavala-Hernandez is described as 5’8” 200 LBS, with black hair and brown eyes.
Police say Jose Fermin Zavala-Hernandez directly targeted Carlos Maciel Pulido, 32, on Wednesday morning May 20, 2020 by waiting outside his apartment and then chasing him with a vehicle that he had recently stolen. Jose Fermin Zavala-Hernandez allegedly ran over Carlos Maciel Pulido in the block of 700 block of Equestrian Drive, and dragged the victim’s body under the stolen SUV until the SUV crashed into a house.
Wheeling police said in the initial press release that they believe the victim was directly targeted, and said they ‘feel’ there is no danger to the general public.
On Sunday May 3, 2020 while DUI in Arlington Heights, Jose Fermin Zavala-Hernandez passed a vehicle on the right at high speed, left the roadway, hit a tree, spun back into the roadway and caused the other vehicle to crash into his vehicle. He then fled the scene and resisted police during his arrest.
On Wednesday May 20, 2020 Jose Fermin Zavala-Hernandez allegedly stole a vehicle while it was occupied or recently occupied to use it to pursue his victim and kill the victim. The suspect then crashed into the home of innocent resident(s).
Wheeling police stated in their press release (which they also posted on their Facebook page) that if Jose Fermin Zavala-Hernandez is seen, citizens should use caution and not approach the suspect, and should contact the Wheeling Police Department at 847-459-2632.
Since Jose Fermin Zavala-Hernandez is known to travel in Arlington Heights and Palatine as well as Wheeling, it is probably best that residents be prepared to call 9-1-1 and report the sighting of Jose Fermin Zavala-Hernandez or “the Wheeling homicide suspect involved in the hit-and-run.”
