Police and firefighter/paramedics from Wheeling responded about 7:40 a.m. Wednesday May 20, 2020 to a report of a crash with injuries in the block of 700 Equestrian Drive (just east of Elmhurst Road).

Police received a report that the driver of the minivan fled on foot and was running north on Elmhurst Road. The suspect was described as a male/Hispanic wearing a baseball cap and gray pants. A neighbor near the crash scene chased the fleeing driver.

All residents were reported safely out of the house, but someone living in the house reported smelling smoke in the house at 7:43 a.m. While firefighters were investigating the report of a smoke smell, a witness told firefighters that the driver may have hit a pedestrian and dragged the pedestrian under the minivan. Firefighters immediately investigated underneath the older model silver Toyota Highlander. There was no fire at the house.

Firefighters at about 7:45 a.m. reported they found a person pinned underneath the vehicle, and requested an extrication response. Fire command reported a person was extricated from under the minivan by about 7:58 a.m. Wheeling Ambulance 23’s crew were assigned to help the pedestrian under the Toyota SUV. Initially information was not available regarding whether the pedestrian died at the scene or at the hospital.

Ambulance 24’s crew reported they were available on the scene by 7:55 a.m. with no additional injured people at the scene.

The incident occurred when the Toyota Highlander driver was possibly southbound on Elmhurst Road and hit the pedestrian either on Elmhurst Road or on Equestrian Drive. Police are investigating the scene.

The information in this article is an early report published before any summary information was confirmed or released by police or fire authorities.
