Police and firefighter/paramedics from Arlington Heights responded starting about 5:56 a.m. Thursday May 14, 2020 to a report of an Activated Fire Alarm and then a transformer fire with a utility pole fire. Power disturbances were likely due to a passing storm with severe cloud-to-ground lightning.
Firefighters arrived about 6:00 a.m. at Hancock Square Apartments, 200 North Arlington Heights Road after responding to an Activated Fire Alarm. Firefighters discovered that the building was likely affected by a power surge, but no fire or smoke was detected and the scene was secure.

Earliest Report of Problem: May 14, 2020, 5:58 AM*At 7:30 AM outages were reported for 1627 customers in four outage areas, but at 7:37 AM the number of customers affected was down to 22 with only two small outage areas.
Firefighters also responded to 2550 North Arlington Heights Road about 6:00 a.m. for the fire involving a utility pole and a transformer. Firefighters on arrival reported a problem with a utility pole on the east side of Arlington Heights near St. Edna Catholic Church. Firefighters also reported a power line down in the roadway.
Other apartment buildings in Arlington Heights and Buffalo Grove were also affected by power issues possibly related to a lightning strike. There was a power failure at Dunton Tower Apartments, and a caller reported smoke in the back alley on the east side of the building. Police and firefighters arrived, but no smoke was showing. The smoke was likely caused by the initial startup of the backup power generator at Dunton Tower Apartments.
Buffalo Grove firefighters responded to Chatham East Apartments, 661 Happfield Lane in Buffalo Grove for an Activated Fire Alarm. Firefighters from Buffalo Grove reported the scene was secure.
