Hazmat Response at Commercial Building at Pan Am Blvd and York Rd (Just South of Elmhurst Rd), Elk Grove Village

Police and firefighter/paramedics from Elk Grove Village Fire Department responded about 8:26 a.m. Friday, May 15, 2020 to a report of a possible hazmat-related incident at 2519 Pan Am Boulevard.

Crews on arrival for the Hazmat Level 1 response reported a mild, yellowish smoke cloud coming from the building, which is at the southwest corner of Pan Am Boulevard and York Road. The chemical was not initially identified, but hazmat crews responded to identify and resolve the incident.

Wind direction was reported to be from the Southwest at 5 MPH at about 8:30 a.m. The incident might be related to rain water flooding that occurred overnight. The involved building is a multi-tenant partitioned commercial building.

Elmhurst Road/York Road was shut down in the area from Devon Avenue to Supreme Drive at 8:42 a.m.

The incident was elevated to a Hazmat Level 2 with hazmat techs only from Arlington Heights, Des Plaines and Mount Prospect only.

According to their official website BromOrganics Corporation is specialist in the production of research organic molecules that are used in pharmaceutical and biotechnology laboratories throughout the world. The company reports that the majority of these materials either contain the Bromine atom, or have been prepared through the use of an organobromine compound.

Narchem Corporation has at least two locations and prepares are large number of pharmaceutical intermediates. The plant location is located near Midway International Airport, according to the official company website.
