Police and firefighter/paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 4:24 p.m. Sunday May 4, 2020 to an Activated Fire Alarm at Mariano’s, 802 East Northwest Highway. The Activated Fire Alarm indicated a sensor was activated in the compressor room. A couple of minutes later there was a report of “smoke” showing in the store.
A witness reported several customers did not want to evacuate the store, but most people inside the store did evacuate.
Firefighters isolated the problem to a refrigerant compressor in an upper area of the store away from customers. Electric power was cut to the compressor unit and an infrared camera was used to inspect the unit for any active fire or overheating.
Extra firefighters were returned by 4:43 p.m. and the store was re-opened to customers a short time later.
A Hussmann refrigeration technician was dispatched and was working on repair of the affected part of the refrigeration system past closing time at 10:00 p.m.
Initially, it was not confirmed whether the “smoke” reported was actual smoke from combustion or refrigerant gas that was venting.
The information in this article is an early report published before any summary information was confirmed or released by police or fire authorities.
