Gurnee police officers responded about 8:45 p.m. Saturday, February 29, 2020 to a parking lot near Gurnee Mills mall in the block of 6100 Grand Avenue to a reports of a fight between juveniles. Initial reports further stated a subject may have a knife and that a person was stabbed.
As officers arrived in the area, they located eight subjects involved with the altercation. One of the subjects, a 13-year-old male, was bleeding from the head. Police and firefighter/paramedics discovered the victim was hit with the knife and not actually stabbed. Although Gurnee Fire responded to the scene to provide medical support for the injuries sustained during the altercation, the victim was not transported by Gurnee Fire to the hospital.
Through further investigation, officers learned that all of the people involved in the fight were acquaintances. Officers also became aware of another juvenile subject who was no longer at the scene. The subject presumably had a small knife, and witnesses stated he hit the victim in the head with the weapon, causing the injury.
Gurnee police stated the fite was was an isolated event, and there was no threat to other patrons in the area.
