Mundelein Mayor Steve Lentz on Monday, March 23, 2020 announced he has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. Lentz is the first municipal leader in the Northwest suburbs to publicly reveal that diagnosis, which so far involves mild symptoms. Lentz went to a COVID-19 testing center Friday, March 20, 2020 after experiencing a “scratchy throat” and received notification of the positive test result on Saturday, March 21, 2020. Steve Lentz and his wife Michelle immediately isolated themselves in their Mundelein home.

Lentz released the information about his diagnosis during Monday night’s Mundelein village board meeting, when the meeting was conducted online while trustees and other officials were connected remotely via computers. The village hall remained empty during the meeting.

“Normally, I would never tell our constituents that I have a runny nose, a cold, the flu, or even a broken limb. But given the awful events surrounding the COVID-19 coronavirus, as an elected official I feel obligated to disclose that over the weekend I tested positive for this virus.”

At the virtual village board meeting, Mayor Lentz stressed the importance of social distancing during this crisis, even if you feel OK.

“My first symptom, a scratchy throat, was so mild I would never have thought I had (the virus). Without the call to social distancing, I think it highly likely that I would have gone about my routine as usual and spread the disease unknowingly.”

— Mayor Steve Lentz

Lentz also asked for people to pray about the crisis five times a day — at 9 a.m., noon, 3 p.m. 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. The Archdiocese of Chicago and Cardinal Blase Cupich proposed such activity for the Chicago area Friday. Regarding prayer Lentz said, ”It doesn’t have to be dramatic. You could just close your eyes for a few moments and say a prayer in your heart.”

As of Monday afternoon, the IDPH reported 1,285 COVID-19 cases and 12 deaths. The health department in Lake County, where Mundelein is located, reported 92 total cases since March 11, 2020 with 12 new cases since Sunday. As of the Monday, March 23, 2020 report, the Lake County Health Department has reported zero deaths from Coronavirus Disease COVID-19, which caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
