Police and firefighter/paramedics from Chicago responded about 10:00 p.m. Saturday February 15, 2020 to an apartment fire at 4820 South King Drive.
Battalion Chief 5 activated a Still and Box Alarm at about 10:04 p.m. for a report that a police officer was temporarily trapped in the basement while attempting a rescue before firefighters arrived. The police officer was safely evacuated from the building by 10:08 p.m., and all police officers that were in the building before firefighters arrived were declared safely accounted for.
Firefighters then went to work to concentrate efforts on fighting a fire on the first floor and basement of a 25 x70 square-foot 3-story apartment building.
There was heavy fire in the basement reported.
The fire department response was elevated to a 2-11 Alarm with an EMS Plan 1 by about 10:23 p.m. Early reports indicate six people were transported to the hospital. Chicago Fire Department reported a 20 year-old woman suffered smoke inhalation with a small-area burn. A 34 year-old woman and a 4 year-old boy suffered smoke inhalation. Three police officers were also transported to hospital(s) with smoke inhalation.
The building was heavily damaged with a partial collapse.
