Police and firefighter/paramedics from North Chicago responded about 8:32 a.m. Thursday, February 20, 2020 to a report of a crash in the southbound lanes of Skokie Highway with a vehicle on fire near the railroad bridge over Skokie Highway (US Route 41) — south of Buckley Road (Route 137) in southwest North Chicago. The crash was actually near the railroad viaduct about 1.5 mile south of Buckley Road near Lake Bluff and Knollwood.
Police and firefighters arrived to find a car burning with one person, the male driver, inside the vehicle. Firefighters extinguished the fire and pronounced the driver dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was the sole occupant inside the vehicle. The driver may have initially been reported as a female.
The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a ditch along the Canadian National railway on southbound Skokie Highway, south of Buckley Road. Railroad tracks run parallel to Skokie Highway on the east side of the road, but railroad tracks also cross over Skokie Highway via a bridge viaduct.
On Thursday afternoon, Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said the driver was not initially unidentified, and that the crash remains under investigation.
There is a significant curve on Skokie Highway north of the railroad viaduct.
