Shawn P. Fontaine, 28, was arrested Monday, February 17, 2020 after police received information from Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital about a 6-week-old infant who was admitted with serious injuries. The severity of the injuries prompted officials to transfer the child to Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. The child, a family member of Fontaine’s, was placed in Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) protective custody Wednesday, according to Huntley Police Department.

Shawn Fontaine and Nicole Kotlarz, 35, live together in the block of 1100 Beacon Avenue. In a separate criminal complaint, Kotlarz is accused of leaving two 6-week-old infants unattended on a couch for several minutes while a 70-pound dog was unrestrained. Kotlarz, who is related to the children, reportedly was in the garage at the time, according to a two-count criminal complaint

Shawn Fontaine is charged with aggravated battery to a child — accused that he caused great bodily harm to the infant by grabbing or hitting the infant on Tuesday. Fontaine, who was jailed Monday at 2:45 p.m., was in custody at the McHenry County Jail on a $100,000 bond. He was released with $10,000 bail on Thursday afternoon, February 20, 2020.

If convicted of aggravated battery to a child, Fontaine could face sentencing between six and 30 years in prison. Fontaine’s next scheduled court date is Thursday morning for a bond hearing.

Huntley police did not initially disclose details about about the mechanism of the infant’s injuries, and did not initially disclose details about how the infant was brought to the hospital.

For leaving the two infants unattended in the separate incident, Nicole Kotlarz was charged with child endangerment – a misdemeanor offense that typically results in a sentence of less than one year in jail. Kotlarz posted bail shortly after her arrest and is scheduled for her next appearance in court on Friday, March 13, 2020.
