Theft of ATM from Drive-Thru Lane at Bank of America on Algonquin Rd, Arlington Heights.

Arlington Heights police about 9:15 p.m. Friday January 31, 2020 received a report from Bank of America security at a remote location that four male offenders were attempting to steal an ATM from the Drive-Thru lane at the Bank of America location at 850 West Algonquin Road. The offenders ripped the ATM from its foundation, and loaded it into a large white pickup truck.

Arlington Heights police were dispatched with over 10 units assigned, and arrived while the pickup truck and four offenders were still on the shopping center property near the strip mall between Bank of America and Lowe’s — in the lot where the Goodwill Store & Donation Center is located. Just before police arrived, the four male offenders bailed out of the truck, leaving behind the truck and the ATM. Police did not initially release whether the offenders ran north into the Arlington Heights Heights Park District’s Kingsbridge Arboretum area, or northwest toward Lowe’s. Police also did not initially confirm whether arriving officers saw the offenders when they arrived, but the search perimeter was predominantly north of the scene in the Surrey Ridge neighborhood — roughly from Kennicott Avenue, Haven Drive, Kaspar Avenue, Victoria Lane, Heritage Park, east to Arlington Heights Road and south to Golf Road. Apparently police believed the offenders were north of the crime scene.

When police investigated the pickup truck, they discovered it was stolen in Bensenville. The pickup truck and the ATM were removed from the scene by midnight Friday/Saturday, apparently towed to a police holding area as part of evidence collection.

Rolling Meadows police also assisted Arlington Heights. A witness reported it appeared that the whole Arlington Heights Police Department responded to the scene. Police did not initially confirm whether K-9 units were also deployed. Several neighbors expressed concern to Cardinal News about what was happening, but none reported seeing any K-9 units in the neighborhood.

At least one Arlington Heights Police drone hovered the area. The very quiet drone was spotted over Surrey Lane and Victoria Lane and Heritage Park, and later was hovering near Golf Road and Fernandez Avenue.

Saturday morning, the indoor services were open for business, and drive-thru lanes were open excluding the ATM.
