It’s “Groundhog Day” all over again as Jeep brand debuts a Big Game spot starring Bill Murray (in his first-ever national television commercial). But this time reliving the same day over and over again is always a new adventure when you’re driving the 2020 Jeep Gladiator.
Bill Murray, star of the film “Groundhog Day,” returned to the Square in Woodstock in January 2020, almost 28 years after the film was was shot in McHenry County locations, including the famous Square in Woodstock. Murray was in Illinois to film a Jeep commercial promoting the Jeep Gladiator, complete with weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray), insurance salesman Ned Ryerson (Stephen Tobolowsky), groundhog handler Buster Green (Brian Doyle-Murray, Murray’s brother), and the groundhog.
Phil Connors again awakens to Sonny and Cher’s “I Got You Babe,” when the clock radio in his room at a bed and breakfast strikes 6:00 a.m.
While filming the commercial, Bill Murray and his brother Brian Doyle-Murray, who also reprised his role as groundhog handler Buster Green, stayed at the same Holiday Inn that they used during their work for the 1993 “Groundhog Day” film.

There was also news shaping up in January 2020 that Bill Murray was in Canada filming his reprised role as Dr. Peter Venkman in ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife.’ The sequel will also feature Dan Aykroyd as Ray Stantz, Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore, Annie Potts as receptionist Janine Melnitz, and Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett. ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ is scheduled for release in the Summer of 2020.

Jeep initially did not confirm that the commercial, which was filmed eight days before Super Bowl LIV, was actually a Super Bowl commercial. For most people, it was hard to avoid making the assumption. Super Bowl LIV on February 2, 2020 falls on Groundhog Day.
“Groundhog Day,” which was released in 1993, features Murray as a TV meteorologist who was locked in time, reliving the same day — over and over again — on Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Woodstock, Illinois was the filming location that “starred” as Punxsutawney.
