Four people were transported to the hospital Wednesday afternoon, after a car being chased by police in west suburban Aurora crashed into at least two other vehicles, and was severed two-thirds to one-third front to rear.
Aurora police responded to a report of shots fired about 1:30 p.m. in the block of 600 South Broadway Avenue on Aurora’s east side. Upon arrival police spotted a suspect vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop of the suspect vehicle. The driver of the vehicle fled in the vehicle — initially believed to be a silver Chevy sedan.
UPDATE: LIVE TRAFFIC MAP >> New York Street Cleared by 7 PM
The driver began driving erratically and crossed over into oncoming traffic on East New York Street near Fox Valley Mall before it crashed into multiple vehicles. Three people were inside the suspect vehicle and were seriously injured, and were transported to area hospital(s). The impact of the silver Chevy that crossed into oncoming traffic was primarily on the driver’s side. The passenger compartment was severed in half diagonally, and the front two-thirds of the sedan became separated from the rear-end of the Chevy sedan by about 100 feet.
A driver of another vehicle involved in the crash was transported with minor injuries to an area hospital. East New York Street remains shut down between Route 59 and Commons Drive. At least part of New York Street remained closed 6:30 p.m.
Aurora police requested the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force to the scene to assist with the investigation.
During the course of this incident, a person with a gunshot wound arrived at an Aurora area hospital. It’s believed they were shot at the original call of shots fired in the block of 600 South Broadway. An initial assessment by the Aurora Police Department indicates the shooting is gang-related.
