Twenty-foot flames lit up a block in Chicago’s South Loop, and more than one hundred firefighters fought to get the fire under control (CBS Chicago’s Mugo Odigwe reports).
Police and firefighters from Chicago responded about 12:31 a.m. Tuesday February 11, 2020 to a fire at Pronto Cleaners and Laundry, 2235 South Michigan Avenue with smoke showing from a 1-story building, and fire crews from Engine 19 and Truck 11 entering the building about 12:34 a.m.
The building fire also involved a business known as Lax Energy Worx at 2237 South Michigan Avenue, which is listed as a Holistic Healing Space.
A Still and Box Alarm response was activated at 12:43 a.m. Staging of additional fire equipment was at Cermak Road and State Street.
Flames eventually vented through the roof of the 50 by 100 foot building by about 12:53 a.m. and crews went to defensive mode. The roof of the building collapsed by 1:00 a.m.
A 2-11 Alarm was activated by about 1:07 a.m. By 1:21 a.m. Chicago firefighters were pouring water on the fire from five master streams and one handline. The main body of fire was extinguished by about 1:38 a.m., and the 2-11 Alarm was struck out by about 1:43 a.m. with more than 100 firefighters working at the scene with 12 engines, 9 trucks and a ladder tower. At least one additional ladder tower was also on the scene in staging.

Initially no injuries were reported, but the building was a total loss, according to Chicago Fire Department.
Initially there was no information about what may have started the fire. Firefighters later in the morning, but still in darkness, responded to extinguish a fire that rekindled at the building.
