Aurora police responded on January 1, 2020 just after midnight to the block of 1600 Fredericksburg Lane in southeast Aurora to a report that a man was shot in the abdomen.
Upon arrival, police and firefighter/paramedics discovered a man in his townhouse seriously injured with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The victim also pointed out to police that there was damage in his wall that appeared to be a bullet hole. The man was transported by Aurora Fire Department paramedics to a nearby hospital where he remains in serious condition. The man had been asleep in his bed when was shot.
Aurora police officers began investigating the incident and determined the trajectory of the round. They were able to determine that the shots were fired from somewhere in the 2300 block of Grand Pointe Trail, about 1,000 feet southeast of the victim’s bedroom. Officers began searching the neighborhood and found more than 30 shell casings outside of a townhouse.
Police spoke with residents and learned that a New Year’s Eve party was occurring at a townhouse during the time of the incident and multiple people reported hearing what sounded like loud pops. Officers received consent from the owner of the townhouse, and then searched the townhouse and vehicles in the driveway, according to the Aurora Police Department. During the search, police officers found a handgun in one of the cars that was linked to Miguel Reyes, according to Aurora Police Department.
Miguel Reyes, 48, also of Fredericksburg Lane in Aurora was charged with reckless discharge and reckless conduct. Both charges are felonies. Miguel Reyes admitted to detectives that he fired multiple rounds from the gun, according to the Aurora Police Department.
