A male DUI suspect from unincorporated Barrington attempted to escape from a sheriff’s deputy after overpowering the handcuffs restraining him.
On January 1, 2020, at approximately 5:40 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Shane B. Zillman, 27, of the block of 28500 Chamberlain Drive in unincorporated Barrington. He was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving while his license was suspended. Zillman was arrested at a park on Shady Lane in unincorporated Barrington.
Upon arriving outside the Lake County Jail, the Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy began to remove Zillman from the back seat of his squad car. After opening the door, Zillman sprang past the deputy and began running southbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Waukegan. Zillman freed one of his hands from the handcuffs.
Zillman refused to stop and the deputy deployed his conductive electrical control device (Taser), striking Zillman. This caused Zillman to fall and he was taken back into custody. Zillman was walked back to the Lake County Jail and subsequently charged with:
Escape
Criminal Damage to State Supported Property
Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol
Driving While License Suspended
Illegal Transportation of Alcohol
Zillman remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing this morning.
Closer inspection of the handcuffs revealed Zillman was able to bend the handcuffs, while they held his arms behind his back. This compromised the integrity of the handcuffs, allowing him to free himself.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office issued a reminder that all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
