Ken Starr, the former independent counsel who led the Whitewater investigation into then-President Bill Clinton, impeached in the mid-1990s; and attorney Alan Dershowitz will join impeachment defense team of President Donald J. Trump.
Trump’s defense team also includes former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi, former federal prosecutor Robert Ray, and Jane Raskin, who also served on the president’s legal team during former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe.
Senate Majority Leader Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer spoke ahead of the Impeachment Trial.
The impeachment trial of President Donald J. Trump on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020 was expected to begin at 1:00 p.m. ET, but the session was in recess, which brought a delay to start of the sessions. Chief Justice of the United States John Roberts presides over the U.S. Senate, and sessions are expected to extend into the early evening.
The Senate Impeachment Trial began at 1:18 p.m. ET.
