Police and firefighter/paramedics from Niles responded about 6:01 p.m. Sunday December 29, 2019 to a report that a pedestrian was down after being struck by a vehicle at Golf Road and Milwaukee Avenue. A 68 year-old woman was struck on Milwaukee Avenue just south of Golf Road while crossing outside a crosswalk, mid-block.
Police and firefighter/paramedics on arrival found a person down unresponsive in the southbound lanes. Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital was immediately put on alert for a patient with life-threatening injuries with traumatic cardiac arrest.
The woman was rushed by Niles Fire Department paramedics to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she was pronounced dead at 6:29 p.m. Sunday.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office released the identity of the 68-year-old woman as Nirmalaben M. Shah, of the block of 700 Dursey Lane in Des Plaines. An autopsy is scheduled by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
A motorist in a small red sedan was traveling southbound in the block of 9400 Milwaukee Avenue, Niles when Nirmalaben M. Shah was struck by the vehicle. She was crossing Milwaukee Avenue with a man from Golf Mill Shopping Center on the west side of Milwaukee Avenue toward Golf Mill Ford on the east side of Milwaukee Avenue. Both pedestrians were crossing mid-block without a crosswalk.
Police did not release the identity of the 39-year-old driver of the small red sedan that struck Nirmalaben M. Shah. The driver, also a resident of Des Plaines, is not facing charges. Niles police said the preliminary investigation “determined impairment or distraction were not a contributing factor in the accident.”
North Regional Major Crimes Task Force (NORTAF) Major Crash Assistance Team investigators responded to the scene for a crash investigation. Milwaukee Avenue was closed Sunday night between Golf Road and Maryland Street during the crash investigation. The roadway was cleared by about midnight Sunday/Monday. The Niles police investigation, assisted by NORTAF, is open following the on-scene investigation, but police reported it does not initially appear there are any other issues.
