Lexus driver loses control of vehicle and launches vehicle from northbound into southbound lanes of I-290/IL-53 near Streets of Woodfield, Schaumburg.
Illinois State Police and firefighter/paramedics from Schaumburg responded about 7:25 p.m. Wednesday December 18, 2019 to a report of a serious crash on Route 53 near Woodfield Road near Schaumburg.
Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that the driver of a Jeep (actually a Lexus) veered off the embankment on the northbound side of Route 53 then returned to the expressway and launched over the center barrier into the southbound lanes of Route 53. At least one 911 caller reported several vehicles were hit on the southbound lanes, but the first fire crew on the scene reported two vehicles involved in a crash on Route 53 above Woodfield Road.
A Plainfield man was killed and two other people were injured in a four-car crash on I-290 near Higgins Road Wednesday night, according to Illinois State Police.
The crash occurred just before 7:25 p.m., when a white Lexus IS300 driven by a 40-year-old man from Palatine was driving west on I-290 (north on Route 53) when it went into the ditch on the northbound side. The driver returned the vehicle to the northbound lanes, but continued over the center median guardrail and into the eastbound lanes of I-290 (southbound Route 53). The Lexus launched into the air and appeared to have landed partially on the roof of silver Chevrolet compact vehicle on the driver’s side.
A 60-year-old man from Plainfield was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Illinois State Police. The Lexus driver from Palatine and a 58-year-old woman from Bolingbrook were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries suffered in the crash.
At one point all eastbound lanes and three westbound lanes were closed, and traffic was directed around the scene via Higgins Road, according to the Illinois State Police. Eventually eastbound (southbound) express and local lanes were practically at a standstill, but trickled past the crash scene using on lane. Later when the southbound backup passed Algonquin Road, police blocked southbound Route 53 at Algonquin Road, preventing people from accessing the direct route to I-90. Eventually the traffic trickling past the scene stopped, and Illinois State Police finished the Accident Reconstruction Investigation.
The damaged vehicles at the crash scene were separated by about 100 yards with two vehicles (the Lexus and the Chevrolet) just north of the Higgins Road exit and one vehicle about 100 yards further south. The location of a fourth vehicle was initially not recognized by Cardinal News.
