Police and paramedics from Westerly responded about 10:32 a.m. Thursday December 19, 2019 to a report of a person shot at the Babcock Village apartments, a three-story affordable housing complex at 122 Cross St, Westerly, Rhode Island.
Ultimately three female victims were shot at the apartment complex for the elderly and disabled in Westerly, Rhode Island before the shooter shot and killed himself. A 47-year-old female employee of the residential complex was killed; and a 38-year-old female employee and a 67-year-old female resident were wounded.
The 38-year-old employee was transported to Westerly Hospital, and transferred by medical helicopter to Yale New Haven Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition. The 67-year-old resident was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition following surgery.
Rhode Island State Police responded with a tactical team to the scene, and neighboring Charlestown Police Department sent police officers to assist Westerly Police Department. Connecticut State Police also stood by at the nearby state border in the town of Stonington. Westerly is a beachside town in southwestern Rhode Island with a population of about 23,000 that borders Stonington, Connecticut.
Westerly Public Schools temporarily put schools on lockdown, which was lifted immediately after the scene was secured.
