Authorities on Thursday December 19, 2019 released the identity of the man killed in a four-vehicle crash Wednesday on I-290/IL-53 near Schaumburg. The driver of a silver Chevrolet Aveo was identified as Edwin R. Mijares, age 60, of Plainfield.
Edwin R. Mijares was driving his Chevrolet Aveo east on I-290 (southbound Route 53) between Woodfield Road and Higgins Road at about 7:20 p.m. when the Palatine male driver of a westbound (northbound) Lexus IS300 lost control of his vehicle and crossed into oncoming traffic on the expressway. The Lexus crossed the center median ditch, went airborne and crashed into the roof of the Aveo on the driver’s side. Two other vehicles were also hit during the crash, according to Illinois State Police.
The driver of the Lexus, a 40-year-old man from Palatine; and the driver of a Hyundai Santa Fe, a 58-year-old female driver from Bolingbrook were transported to an area hospital for injuries suffered in the crash.
The damaged vehicles at the crash scene were separated by about 100 yards with two vehicles (the Lexus IS 300 and the Chevrolet Aveo) just north of the Higgins Road exit and one vehicle about 100 yards further south. The location of a fourth vehicle was initially not recognized by Cardinal News.
