Chicago police responded about 11:20 p.m. Sunday December 22, 2019 to a report of vehicular hijacking while three children were the victim’s SUV in the block of 3100 West Devon Avenue in the West Ridge or West Rogers Park neighborhood. A 49-year-old man left his Toyota Highlander running with his three children inside while he went into a pizza business. The children were ages 4, 9 and 16 at the time of the vehicular hijacking.
The offender drove just four blocks before ditching the SUV with the three children in the block of 3500 West Devon Avenue. Police immediately located the Toyota Highlander SUV, and the children were reunited with their father a short time later. The three children were initially reported to be unharmed.
An initial police investigation discovered that offenders arrived near the pizza business in a stolen black Toyota Camry. A passenger got out of the Camry, jumped into the Highlander’s driver seat, and drove off with the children inside.
Police said the driver of the stolen Camry picked-up the passenger/carjacker, and both fled the scene in the Toyota Camry.
The offender’s car Toyota Camry was found at a gas station in the block of 4200 West Lawrence Avenue, and four suspects were arrested. The driver of the Camry is still at large.
Charges for the four suspects connected to the stolen Camry were not initially declared, but are pending.
