Essex Deputy Chief Constable Pippa Mills at a press conference told reporters in Grays that the incident was an “absolute tragedy and a very sad day for Essex Police and the community” (Sky News).
Thirty-nine people, including a teenager, were found found dead inside a semi-trailer truck “lorry container” at the Waterglade Industrial Park in Grays, Essex just north of the River Thames about 18 miles east of London.
Police were called about 1:40 a.m. Wednesday October 23, 2019 after ambulance service medics discovered the bodies at Waterglade Industrial Park in Grays. Police did not release the nature of the call that dispatched the ambulance service to the scene. The East of England Ambulance Service said it had sent five ambulances, hazardous area response teams and a car from the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance “in the early hours of the morning”.
All 39 people were pronounced dead at the scene. The lorry driver, a 25-year-old male suspect from Northern Ireland, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
The truck is believed to have arrived in the United Kingdom from Bulgaria, entering the UK at Holyhead in north Wales on Saturday, October 19, 2019. Holyhead is directly across the Irish Sea and St George’s Channel about 65 miles east of Dublin, Ireland.
