Waukegan police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:45 p.m. Thursday September 19, 2019 to a report bicyclist was down, apparently hit by a vehicle at Eighth Street and Jackson Street.
Police and firefighter/paramedics found a 60-year-old Waukegan man dead in the road who appeared to have been struck by a vehicle. Paramedics confirmed that the man was dead, and an investigation for a fatal hit-and-run was initiated by Waukegan police investigators.
Investigators believe the man was riding his bike at the intersection of Eighth Street and Jackson Street when he was struck. Investigators discovered a silver 2006 Cadillac SUV, that they believe struck the victim. Initially Waukegan police did not reveal whether a witness or witnesses provided tip(s) or whether security video captured the crash.
The intersection is located in a residential neighborhood with a grocery store and dining establishment on the corner on Waukegan’s south side. The Speed Limit on Jackson Street is 30 MPH.
Authorities did not initially release the man’s identity pending notification of his family. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, September 23, 2019. Eighth Street did not appear to have the Speed Limit posted in the vicinity of the intersection.
