Mundelein police arrested a 15-year-old defendant Sunday afternoon, September 29, 2019 and charged the teen in a juvenile petition with reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. A firearm was recovered, according to police.
The alleged shooter and the victim are reported to be friends.
Police and firefighter/paramedics from Mundelein responded about 8:30 p.m. Saturday September 28, 2019 to a report of a male teen shot at an apartment in the block of 200 Longwood Terrace.
Upon arrival police found a 15-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the neck, and determined the scene was secure. Mundelein firefighter/paramedics transported the teen to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center, where his condition was described as “stabilized” by police.
Witnesses at the scene gave officers conflicting statements, according to Mundelein Police Department. Investigators suspected that someone inside the apartment was in possession of the gun when the gun discharged.
The investigation, with the assistance of the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, is ongoing. Mundelein police did not initially provide a description of a suspect or reveal whether they had any leads on a possible suspect. Mundelein Police Department described that the incident was initially concluded to be an isolated incident with no risk to the community.
