Cook County Sheriff’s police and Roselle firefighter/paramedics responded Sunday August 25, 2019 to a report of a drowning in a home in an unincorporated area near Schaumburg in the block of 1400 South Blackhawk Drive. Griffin (Finn) William Butler — a 2 year-old boy from Gilberts, Illinois — was found unresponsive, apparently from an accidental drowning, at a barbecue party at the home.

On Thursday August 29, 2019 at 10:54 a.m. the boy was pronounced dead at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where there is a Pediatric Critical Care Unit.
Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) officials are investigating the boy’s death, but have concurred with police, who initially on Monday August 26, 2019 considered the death to be accidental.
A Cook County Medical Examiner’s office autopsy released Sunday September 1, 2019 reported the boy died from complications of drowning, but did not conclude the manner of his death.
DCFS has not had prior contact with the boy’s family. The time of the 9-1-1 call was not initially released by Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department.
