VIDEO: A lightning strike injured at least five people on Saturday at the PGA Tour event in Atlanta. The tournament was suspended until Sunday and five people were transported to the hospital.
Six spectators were injured when they were under a pine tree when it was struck by lightning Saturday August 24, 2019 at the PGA Tour Championship at the East Lake Golf Club, 2575 Alston Drive Southeast Atlanta, Georgia in Atlanta. “A tree near the range/15 green/16 tee was hit, and debris from that strike injured” the spectators according to a PGA official statement. There was a weather delay after the third round when the lightning struck the tree. The lightning strike was caught on video from a distance, and smoke rose from the base of the tree immediately after the strike. There was initially no confirmation whether any of the spectators were burned or injured by direct lightning effects. Immediately after the lightning strike, in news photos showed several people were down on the ground, attended by about nine first aid personnel in yellow shirts.
Early reports were mixed with one report saying five adults and one child were injured, while another report said that four men and two women were hurt.
Play was suspended for the day on Saturday August 24, 2019 and was scheduled to resume at 8:00 a.m., according to the PGA. At least four Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued in Georgia on Saturday.
