There is a possibility of increasing coverage and intensity of thunderstorms this morning through afternoon Sunday. The greatest chance of severe weather and heavy rain is between 7:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was activated by the National Weather Service at 6:05 a.m. The first Severe Thunderstorm Warning today for Cook County was issued at 8:00 a.m.; however the severe weather is predominantly going to pass south of Arlington Heights and most of the northwest suburbs. A second area of severe storms could target Arlington Heights and the northwest suburbs, but is currently northwest of Peoria — about 90 minutes away at 7:20 a.m. (estimated arrival 8:50 a.m.).
Weather Radar (also nexrad.chgowx.com) shows two areas of thunderstorms. One is a thin line of potentially severe thunderstorms from south McHenry, east Kane, Will, and southwest Cook County. A much larger area of potentially severe thunderstorms and heavy rain from southwest Wisconsin to Rockford to Quad Cities and Peoria. The storms are moving from southwest to northeast.
