After almost six months following a fatal crash, bail was set Wednesday July 31, 2019 at $150,000 for Justin O’Connor, age 18 of Des Plaines, after he was charged with two counts of aggravated driving under the influence and one count of reckless homicide. The charges follow a fatal crash that occurred in early February 2019 in Des Plaines.
Des Plaines police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 1:52 PM Tuesday February 5, 2019 to a report of a crash with entrapment near 651 South Wolf Road Des Plaines, Illinois. The crash killed Kais Shamaun, age 58, of Des Plaines.
A witness told police investigating the crash scene that the driver of a red Infiniti was southbound on Wolf Road and crossed the center line, crashing into a red Honda CRV that was northbound in the proper lane on Wolf Road.
The Honda CRV spun around and ended up off the road in a parking lot. The entire roof of the Honda CRV was removed to extricate the lone occupant of the Honda. The patient in the Honda CRV, Kais Shauaun, was transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, and was pronounced dead.
Justin O’Connor’s red Infiniti also spun around, but remained on Wolf Road. A third vehicle — a dark sedan — received minor damage, but was also off the roadway after the crash.
Des Plaines police said O’Connor was intoxicated and driving at a high rate of speed at about 1:51 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, and lost control of the Infiniti.
O’Connor remained in custody Thursday, August 1, 2019 at the Cook County jail, and is scheduled to return to Cook County Circuit Court in Skokie on Wednesday, August 28, 2019.
