The Lake County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group (SIG) recently concluded a five-month investigation which led to the arrest of a documented street gang member, who is a convicted felon. Damond Martin, 28, of the 1000 block of West Losey Road, Galesburg, was arrested on August 2, 2019, after SIG Detectives obtained an arrest warrant. He was indicted on August 28, 2019.
In November of 2018, Martin sold an undercover SIG Detective a semi-automatic firearm with an obliterated serial number. In April of 2019, Martin sold an undercover SIG Detective a MAC-11 semi-automatic firearm. Both sales occurred in Waukegan.
Following the investigation, an arrest warrant was obtained, and Martin was arrested on August 2nd. At that time, he was charged with two counts of Unlawful Sale of a Stolen Firearm (Class 2 Felony and Class 4 Felony).
On August 28, 2019, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office presented several charges to a Lake County Grand Jury regarding this case. The Grand Jury issued the following indictments on Martin:
Armed Habitual Criminal (Four Counts – Class X Felonies)
Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon (Six Counts – Class 2 Felonies)
Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Two Counts – Class 2 Felonies)
Unlawful Delivery of a Firearm (One Count – Class 2 Felony)
Unlawful Delivery of a Firearm (Two Counts – Class 4 Felonies)
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) Chicago Field Division are members of the SIG Group and had a significant role in this investigation.
Sheriff John Idleburg said, “Keeping firearms out of the hands of felons and those who can’t legally possess them is a major priority for our Special Investigations Group. I am grateful for the collaboration of our detectives, the ATF Chicago Field Division, Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, and all of our partner SIG agencies. These men and women put themselves in very dangerous situations every day to keep our community safe.”
Martin remains held on $100,000.00 bail and is due in court this afternoon at 1:30PM in courtroom T110.
All suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
