Community members in Aurora gathered Saturday evening to honor Maritza Cazares, age 19, who died in a shooting Friday night, and is not believed to be the intended target of the shooting, according Aurora police.
Aurora police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:20 p.m. Friday July 26, 2019 to a report of a shooting in the block of 400 of East Benton Street near 4th Street, about three blocks east of Aurora City Hall.
Aurora police discovered a 19 year-old woman was shot and that the scene was secure. Aurora firefighter/paramedics transported the woman to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Police later identified the female victim as 19-year-old Maritza Cazares of Aurora, and began a homicide investigation.
According Paris Lewbel, an Aurora Police Department spokesperson, the shooting is not believed to be a random shooting, but the female victim is not considered the intended target at this point in the investigation.
A cross was placed on the front porch of the home, where she was killed.
