Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 9:20 p.m. Saturday July 13, 2019 to a report of a sexual assault at Falcon Park at 2195 North Hicks Road just north of Rand Road. Palatine Police officers located a 19 year-old female victim who stated she had been sexually assaulted by a male offender while running on the outdoor track at the facility. The victim, who is a resident of Palatine, did not know the offender and she was able to fight him off. The offender then fled on a black bicycle. Firefighter/paramedics from the Palatine Fire Department transported the victim to Northwest Community Hospital where she was treated and released with non-life threatening injuries.
Palatine Police investigators were able to obtain photos of the suspect from nearby surveillance cameras (pictured below). The suspect was described as a male Hispanic, approximately 35-40 years of age, 5’0” to 5’2” tall and 140 pounds.
Due to the positive feedback from the original press release and an extensive investigation, members of the Palatine Police Department as well as several independent witnesses reported that they recognized the person in a Palatine Police Department press release that included photos of the suspect. The suspect was identified as Simon Alcantar-Cruz. On Wednesday July 24, 2019, 28 year-old Simon Alcantar-Cruz who resides in unincorporated Palatine was charged with Aggravated Battery (Class 3 Felony), Criminal Sexual Abuse (Class 4 Felony), and Unlawful Restraint (Class 4 Felony). After being placed under arrest, Alcantar-Cruz made a post Miranda statement implicating himself in the Aggravated Battery, Criminal Sexual Abuse, and Unlawful Restraint.
On Thursday July 25, 2019, Simon Alcantar-Cruz was taken to the Cook County Third District Courthouse in Rolling Meadows for a bond hearing where Judge Martin set a $750,000 “D” bond (10% applies). Alcantar-Cruz’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 22, 2019 in Room 108.
