The National Fraternal of Order of Police is demanding an apology after Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot was overheard calling a police union’s second leader a “clown.”
A microphone near Lightfoot picked up the candid comment as FOP Lodge 7 First Vice President Patrick Murray was approaching the microphone during Wednesday’s City Council meeting July 24, 2019.
Murray was at Wednesday’s City Council meeting to express support for the officers who were fired by the Chicago Police Board last week over the alleged cover-up of the murder of Laquan McDonald by a police officer.
When media asked about her comment, Lightfoot said, “it was not appropriate for me to say that — out loud.” When asked if she should apologize, she said, “I think I just did; I think I said I shouldn’t have said that out loud.”
The National FOP is calling on the mayor to conduct herself with “more dignity and less immaturity.”
Chuck Canterbury,National President of the Fraternal Order of Police, called on Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot to apologize to the members of Chicago Lodge #7 and to the lodge’s Vice President Patrick Murray for referring to him as an “FOP clown” during the city council meeting.
Canterbury said, “Mayor Lightfoot went out of her way to say that she regretted calling Vice President Murray a ‘clown’ ‘out loud,’ suggesting that she holds this 30-year veteran law enforcement officer — and the members he represents in contempt.”
Canterbury also said, “Elected officials hampering and curtailing the efforts of police officers, her city is among the most dangerous and violent in the nation and these men and women of the CPD are putting themselves in harms way to keep their fellow citizens safe. These officers and their elected leadership should be treated with respect.”
The Fraternal Order of Police is the largest law enforcement labor organization in the United States, with more than 348,000 members.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot was caught on an open microphone belittling the number two man in the local Fraternal Order of Police during a city council meeting. Lightfoot is heard saying “Oh, back again. This is this FOP clown.”
