Watch live: KTLA 5 News is covering the aftermath following a preliminarily 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck near Ridgecrest on Friday, July 5, 2019. This follows a magnitude 6.4 foreshock that rattled SoCal on Independence Day.
A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Southern California near Ridgecrest on Friday July 5, 2019 at 9:16:32 PM PT — the second significant magnitude earthquake in two days. A woman interviewed on CNN stated that the ground continues to roll almost 25 minutes after tonight’s 7.1 Magnitude earthquake.

The July 5, 2019 earthquake was again centered near Ridgecrest, which was also the location near the July 4th, 2019 earthquake.
Tonight’s earthquake is at least 11 times stronger than the earthquake that struck near Ridgecrest on Thursday morning July 4, 2019. CalTech Seismologist Lucy Jones on Thursday morning had said there was a 5 percent chance of a stronger earthquake striking the area. The July 4, 2019 earthquake is now considered a foreshock to tonight’s stronger earthquake.
There have been hundreds of aftershocks in the past two days. These smaller earthquakes are now considered foreshocks of tonight’s 7.1 earthquake.
The July 5, 2019 quake was larger than the destructive 1994 Northridge earthquake, which measured 6.7 magnitude, and which occurred in a much more populated area. The Northridge earthquake killed 57 people and injured over 8,700 people.
