Kia Sedona Crash with an Amtrak Hiawatha Train in Morton Grove, traveling southbound Milwaukee to Chicago with about 14 miles remaining on the trip to Union Station.
Morton Grove and Niles firefighter/paramedics and Morton Grove and Metra police responded about 12:14 p.m. Sunday July 14, 2019 to a crash involving an Amtrak train and a red Kia Sedona minivan. The Sedona minivan was apparently eastbound on Lincoln Avenue and went around the activated train gates as a southbound Amtrak train was approaching. The Amtrak train passengers aboard the train were traveling from Milwaukee to Chicago’s Union Station when the crash involving the minivan occurred just north of the Morton Grove Metra station. The driver of the Kia Sedona as pronounced dead at the scene, and Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital was notified. The Sedona had severe damage on the driver’s side, as the Sedona was launched at least 240 feet from the location of impact. The Sedona came to rest on Lehigh Avenue, just north of Chestnut Street. The Amtrak train was able to stop before it passed the Morton Grove train station.
Amtrak reported on Twitter that Hiawatha Train 334 was stopped “due to a vehicle on the tracks in the train’s path” at 12:27 p.m. Sunday. Police say a man driving a minivan went around the barrier near the Morton Grove station and was hit by the train.
The northbound tracks of the Metra Milwaukee District North Line were opened about 1:30 p.m. and a Union Pacific train passed the scene at “walking pace” shortly after 1:30 p.m.
Metra completed their investigation about 2:28 p.m. Next, Morton Grove and Niles firefighter/paramedics began extrication of the driver, and completed extrication and removal of the body of the driver at about 2:51 p.m.
