City of Chicago Streets and Sanitation Department maintenance crews were planning to cut down weeds along the Chicago River that can cause skin irritation that can cause burns and blisters on exposed skin.
Wild Parsnip plants were spotted at various locations along the Chicago River, especially near the North Avenue Bridge. The Chicago’s Streets and Sanitation Department was also researching to determine whether workers were allowed to cut the plants or whether destruction of the weeds was prohibited because of protected species regulations.
A floral stem develops in the second year and can grow to more than 60 inches tall. The shoots and leaves of parsnip must be handled with care because sap contains furanocoumarins — phototoxic chemicals that cause blisters on skin exposed to sunlight. Exposure to the sunlight, sap combo can cause a skin condition known as phytophotodermatitis. The symptoms are redness, burning sensation, and blisters. Affected skin can remain sensitive and discolored for two years.
