Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded at 12:07 p.m. Monday June 24, 2019 to an activated fire alarm in a 3-story brick apartment building at 759 East Pennsylvania Drive in Palatine. The first Palatine Fire Department crews arrived on the scene at 12:12 p.m. and were told by the resident that there was a kitchen fire in Unit 5 that was extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system. The initial fire department crew made access to the third floor apartment and confirmed that the automatic fire sprinkler system completely extinguished the fire and limited fire damage to the kitchen area. The fire was declared under control at 12:16 p.m. Firefighters continued to perform salvage, overhaul, and investigative activities for some time after the fire was extinguished.
No civilians or firefighters were injured in the fire, which was contained to the apartment’s kitchen area. Damage estimates were not available at the time of new release from Palatine Fire Department. The cause of the cooking fire has been determined to be accidental in nature.
Palatine Fire Department explained that automatic fire sprinklers are highly effective and reliable elements of a total fire protection system. When fire sprinklers are present, fires were kept to the room of origin 97 percent of the time (U.S. Experience with Sprinklers, NFPA report, 2017). The fire on Pennsylvania Drive today is an excellent example of automatic fire sprinkler effectiveness, according to Palatine Fire Department.
In addition, the Palatine Fire Department reminds everyone, as always in the department’s effort to save lives and protect property, that working smoke alarms save lives.
Palatine Fire Department recommends that smoke alarms are tested monthly and are less than 10 years old.
