UPDATED ARTICLE CORRECTS DATE AND TIME OF FATAL CRASH IN DES PLAINES
Des Plaines police and firefighter/paramedics responded at 7:39 a.m. Thursday April 11, 2019 to a report of a crash with injuries at Wolf Road and Forest Avenue. The first crew on the scene reported three vehicles with moderate damage involved in a crash.
Crews on the scene requested an extra ambulance and a truck crew by 7:44 a.m. after discovering one patient unconscious. Ambulance 62’s crew left the scene with extra crews on board the ambulance by 7:48 a.m., transporting a female patient to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge
Janice Meyer, age 67, died 11 days later at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.
Janice Meyer was in her vehicle on Thursday April 11, 2019 about 7:39 a.m. when her vehicle was rear-ended at Wolf Road and Forest Avenue in Des Plaines, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Following medial treatment at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital beginning Thursday, April 11, 2019, Janice Meyer was pronounced dead at 11:43 a.m. Monday April 22, 2019 — the day after Easter or Easter Monday.
Meyer, who lived in Des Plaines, died from complications of multiple injuries from the crash, according to an autopsy conducted by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Her death was ruled an accident.
The errant driver of the offending vehicle that caused the rear-end crash was issued a citation for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, but no criminal charges were filed, and no criminal charges are expected to be filed according to Des Plaines Police Department.
The Speed Limit on Wolf Road near the intersection is 35 MPH, and the Speed Limit on Forest Avenue near the intersection is 25 MPH. There is some skepticism that a rear-end crash of 35 MPH or less would cause a fatality.
