Chicago police said a man was killed in a gunfire exchange with officers on the West Side Saturday.
CPD said Chicago police officers stopped a man while he was walking about 3:30 p.m. Saturday May 11, 2019 in the block of 1400 South Lawndale Avenue. Police reported the man engaged in an “armed confrontation” with officers then fled.
Chicago police officers, who were called to the scene for back up, found him a short time later, and gunfire was exchanged again. The armed male was struck and fatally wounded. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A gun was recovered at the scene, was located near Theodore Herzl Elementary School and several blocks west of Cinespace Studios.
CPD announced that all police officers involved in exchange of gunfire are now on 30-day administrative duties, which is standard procedure for a police-involved shooting.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating.
