All seven members of Chicago’s Board of Education on Wednesday May 22, 2019 announced they will be resigning.
All seven members were appointed by former Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and during their terms there has been an increase in graduation rates and a large number of school closings.
On Wednesday, newly elected Mayor Lori Lightfoot confirmed she was disbanding the school board, and will be appointing members for an interim board in June 2019.
Her long-term goal is to create an elected school board, and legislation for an elected school board is pending in Springfield.
Chicago teacher union leaders backed Toni Preckwinkle for Chicago mayor for the 2019 mayoral election.
