Lake Zurich police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 1:30 p.m. Friday April 12, 2019 to the Liberty Lake Apartments, 201 South Buesching Road after a maintenance man reported seeing items that appeared suspicious. Initially the items were suspected to possibly be large fireworks or explosive devices, but the Waukegan Fire Department Bomb Squad, which was dispatched to the scene, determined the items were actually homemade batteries that were not hazardous.
Initially residents of the Liberty Lake Apartments were evacuated to the nearby Ela Township Community Center, but were allowed to return to their apartments after the bomb squad and police declared an all-clear about 6:00 p.m.
Lake Zurich police were initially unable to reach out to the tenant, but when the tenant was contacted, the tenant gave consent to search the apartment, where bomb squad personnel looked for any other items.
Lake Zurich police reported Friday night that there was no crime connected with the items, and that no charges will be filed.
The South Lake County Regional Community Emergency Response Team and area police departments set up a secure a perimeter around the apartment building during the investigation of the items.
